John Junkin says Thank-You

The electors of Moyola have made their choice for the last council as we know it at Magherafelt. Democracy has had its way and that is what it is all about. In four years' time re-organisation will deliver a much changed set-up. This time, for the first in six elections, I have been eclipsed by others who have consistently shown by their actions that they are quite prepared to put IRA/Sinn Fein into our government.

I must say that down through these years I have had a team of very loyal supporters who never, ever let me down. I pay tribute to their tenacity and trust that they can say something similar about me. I would also like to say ‘thank-you’ to those electors and ratepayers who gave me their No.1 and No.2 votes on the ballot paper. Those who gave me a useless No.3 vote obviously did not want a strong unionist to represent them. They will be well satisfied with what they have now got.

The management of the myriad of local council functions will now fall to others and I do, however, wish them well. But when they collectively run into the predicted £900,000.00 European surcharge in 2009, they need not come running back to me for solace because there will not be any!
